Adams State College Football: names DeLorenzo an all-American

Cornerstone of ASC’s nationally-ranked defense earns second all-America honor

LIBERTY, Mo. – The accolades continue to roll in for Adams State senior linebacker Rocco DeLorenzo (Arvada, Colo.), as the leader of a Grizzly defense that ranked 16th nationally in total defense was named to an All-America Team Honorable Mention on Thursday.

For DeLorenzo, the national recognition is the second since concluding his final season as a Grizzly, as he was also named a Second Team All-American in December. Other post-season accolades have included First Team All-RMAC, First Daktronics All-Super Region #3 and First Team All-Colorado recognition.

The All-America Team was selected by the staff of with input from coaches and sports information directors around Division II. The organization has named an all-American team each year since its inception in 2000.

For the second straight season DeLorenzo led the ASC defesne in tackles, wrapping up ball-carriers 107 times. That total ranked 27th in the nation and were a career-high as well as the seventh-most in a season for the Grizzlies in the progrma’s DII era (1992-present) history. Included among that total were 13.0 tackles for loss, ranking ninth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), with 4.0 of those being sacks.

DeLorezno concluded his career with 300 tackles, the third most in a career at Adams State.

Behind DeLorenzo, the Grizzlies held opponents to just 291.73 yards per game, ranked 16th in the nation and second in the RMAC. The defense was a large factor in the Grizzlies going 6-5 this season, posting their first winning record since 2006.

ASC concluded the 2011 season with a 49-10 victory over rival Western State on Nov. 12 to its 10th straight win in the Colorado Classic match-up. The Grizzlies final RMAC record of 4-5 was good for fifth in the league standings, a position they’ve earned in four straight seasons.
