Kutztown and California Selected to NCAA Football Playoffs

Lock Haven, Pa. –
PSAC champion Kutztown and PSAC West co-champion California have been selected to play in the 2011 NCAA Division II football playoffs, as the entire 24-team field was announced on Sunday night on NCAA.com.

Kutztown (10-1) earned the No. 3 seed in Super Region 1 and the Golden Bears will face No. 6 Concord out of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The first round game, which will be hosted by Kutztown, will be a matchup of conference champions as Concord won the WVIAC regular season title with a win in yesterday’s regular season finale. This will mark the second straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs for Kutztown, which earned its first ever NCAA berth last year. The Golden Bears will be looking for their first playoff win in history after falling to Shepherd in last year’s regional semifinals. The winner of the Concord-Kutztown game will play at the No. 2 seed New Haven, the Northeast 10 champion, in the second round next week.

California (9-2) earned the No. 5 seed in the region and will take on No. 4 seed Elizabeth City State out of the CIAA. ESCU lost in the CIAA championship game yesterday to Winston-Salem State. Despite being the lower seed, the Vulcans will host the first round game this Saturday as ECSU did not put in a bid to host. The Vulcans will be making their fifth straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs, the longest current streak in the PSAC and in Super Region 1. It will also be the fifth playoff appearance in school history for the Vulcans, which ties them with Slippery Rock for the fifth-most in PSAC history. The winner of the ECSU-California game will play at the No. 1 seed Winston-Salem State, the CIAA champions, in the second round next week.
