Nccu’s Irvine Earns All-Meac Football Honors As Return Specialist

Durham Native Tops Eagles in Punt Return and Kickoff Return Average

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University redshirt junior Geovonie Irvine has earned all-conference recognition as a return specialist, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced Tuesday.

A native of Durham, N.C., Irvine garnered second-team All-MEAC honors as voted on by the league’s head football coaches and sports information directors.

The 5-7, 161-pound wide receiver started returning punts and kickoffs in the fourth game of the season against Savannah State. The second kickoff Irvine touched, he returned 81 yards for a touchdown.

Irvine finished the season as NCCU’s leader in both punt return and kickoff return average. He returned 18 kickoffs for 400 yards and a touchdown, an average of 22.2 yards per kickoff return. He also returned six punts for 54 yards, an average of 9.0 yards per punt return, with a long effort of 17 yards.

Although not recognized for his receiving attributes, Irvine capped his third season as an Eagle with team-highs of 47 catches for 580 yards and five touchdowns. With one season remaining, he ranks fourth among NCCU’s all-time receptions leaders with 138 career catches.
