St. Cloud State Football Wins Share of NSIC Title

St. Cloud, Minn. – #13/#15 St. Cloud State University won a share of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) football title with a 47-14 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium.

The Huskies, ranked fifth in Super Region 3 this week, finished the regular season with a 9-2 overall record and 8-2 NSIC record. St. Cloud State shares the conference title with Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State University, Mankato. In addition, the Huskies finish the NSIC North with a 5-1 record in a first place tie with Minnesota Duluth.

The win extended St. Cloud State’s home win streak to 15 games and marks the fourth straight winning season for the Huskies, all under head coach Scott Underwood.

The official announcement regarding the NCAA football playoffs will be made tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

Sophomore running back Michael Walker (Walworth, Wis.) rushed for three touchdowns on runs of one, six and four-yards, all in the first quarter and finished the day with 16 carries for 73 yards. Senior running back Andy Folz (Spring Grove) scored his second touchdown of the season on a ten-yard run in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 carries for 69 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton) completed 11 of 17 passes for 157 yards.

Junior wide receiver Chad Peterson (Winona) and first year tight end Tony Schmitz (Sartell) had three catches each for the Huskies. Petersonfinished the day with 48 yards receiving and Schmitz 43 yards.

Sophomore defensive back Eric Poggenburg (Cedarburg, Wis.) led the Huskies with seven tackles and seniors Chris Key (Libertyville, Ill.), Cody Kave (Waukesha, Wis.) and Joe Everson (Lakeville) each had five tackles.

MSU Moorhead was led by quarterback Bryson Pluta with five carries for 35 yards and he completed five passes for 79 yards. E’Boni Lucious-West rushed for a touchdown and Kendall Hendon caught a touchdown pass from Kevin Koch. Hendon finished the game with three catches for 83 yards including the 40-yard touchdown reception.

The Dragons finish the season 2-9 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC.

St. Cloud State led 33-7 at the half and finished the game with 435 yards of total offense. The Dragons compiled 206 yards of offense.

The Huskies honored 18 seniors in a half-time ceremony. The senior class is a part of four winning seasons and have compiled a 33-13 overall won loss record and a 31-9 record in NSIC games.
