Sykora’s numbers merit GAC Football Honor

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Southern Arkansas quarterback Tyler Sykora (Hot Springs Village) passed his way into the Mulerider record book and the weekly Great American Conference football awards as he was named offensive player of the week for his record-setting performance in Saturday’s 53-43 loss to Ouachita Baptist.

Despite the loss, SAU notched nine school records against the Tigers, with Sykora accounting for six individual marks and two team records.

The red-shirt sophomore completed 32 of 56 passes, both single-game second best efforts, for a school record 520 yards, and tied his own record of five touchdown passes from a week ago against Arkansas Tech.  His -38 yards rushing from four sacks knocked his total offense down to 482 yards, but still a new school mark.  Sykora’s totals on the day lifted him for the season to 164 pass completions in 277 attempts for 2,072 yards and 17 touchdowns, all new Southern Arkansas season records.  The passing yardage provided new team records of 520 yards in a single game and 2,162 for a season.

The award is the first of Sykora’s career, and he’s the third Mulerider player to be honored this year.
